A shaft is a cylindrical object worn between bearings or wheels or gears, but a few are square. A shaft is a mechanical part that supports a rotating part and rotates with it to transmit motion, torque, or bending moments. Generally a round metal rod, each section can have a different diameter. The rotating parts of the machine are attached to the shaft.
