Ask for the published diameter and length range, the permanent mould inventory, and whether the line runs horizontally or vertically. Diameter, moulds and orientation are routine answers for anyone who owns the equipment. A broker reselling castings has to go and ask someone else.
Centrifugal casting cannot be improvised, which is why the test works. Spinning machines are dedicated, moulds are held per diameter, and the two line types suit different geometry. Three failure modes account for most centrifugal casting problems: bore porosity, radial segregation and grade substitution. All three are invisible on a finished part, which is why the evidence has to be specified in the purchase order rather than inspected on arrival.
Inclusions and gas porosity migrate to the bore during spinning. That is normally an advantage, because the bore gets machined away. It becomes a defect when the machining allowance is too small and the contaminated layer stays in the part.
Radial segregation is the second. Under high G-force, alloying elements of different density can separate through the wall, leaving composition that varies from bore to outside diameter. A material test report taken from the wrong location will not show it.
Grade substitution is the third, and the most commercially motivated. HK40 is quoted, something cheaper is poured, and nothing on the delivery note says so.
